Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples are crafting an intricate, beautiful love story set in a ridiculous science fiction world filled with strange creatures and living spaceships. Vaughan has masterfully woven together a deep relationship drama and a hilarious comedy by focusing on incredible characters. Topping this off is Staples’ art, which can be straightforward and beautiful and then easily shift to bizarre. Issue #8 just continues to bring more of what makes Saga so amazing. Vaughan and Staples show us the origins of our main characters’ romance, while continuing to build the relationship with Marko’s parents. Vaughan juxtaposes quiet, reflective moments with high-stakes action, and takes the readers along for a wild ride.
To put it simply, there is no other comic that you should be reading more than Saga. It is the best book out there. It is simple and delightful, while containing a high level of craftsmanship rarely seen in modern comics. Wisely, Image has made it very easy and affordable to get the initial trade paperback and catch up on the story, so you really have no excuse. Buy Saga; you will not regret it.
