Speaking of insanity, I worry about Gail Simone. She’s brilliant, funny, and much, much darker than her adorable persona will have you believe. Combine this series with her Vertigo title, Clean Room, and you have a recipe that shows that the woman who got her start writing comics based on The Simpsons has a very scary side that is best served with heavy doses of her near flawless pacing. Gail Simone scares me, and - especially with this series - I love her for it.

Jim Calafiore, who I also have my concerns about, is also knocking it out of the park. This is a book with some totally unique characters, a toxic but beautiful environment, and some incredible framing, all of which show how good Calafiore is not only as an artist, but as a storyteller. The characters are king with this series, but there are enough here that really make this a book worth reading and worth talking about.

I’m very sad to see this book go, but I’m looking very forward to the conclusion of Issue #6. If it’s like anything that Simone and Calafiore have unleashed so far, it’s going to be a very exciting ride. Also, if anyone knows where I can get the Magic: The Gathering-inspired cards that are on the last page of this issue, please let me know. They’re probably the coolest thing to ever not actually exist.
