The heroes have done their best, but the diabolical Southern Belle really, really hates them and would really like to see them die. In spectacular fashion, if she had her way. But with a certain left-for-dead hero returning and some crazy, inexplicable things coming from the giant hole in the ground in the middle of the city, life isn’t really going too well for anyone.

Gail Simone is one of those writers who can’t do anything wrong. And when she does, it’s almost always pretty much okay since she’s such a warm and humorous writer. There’s something about her work that feels personal, engaging, and often hilarious. That, combined with the horrifying nature of this book, makes for an odd combination, since those are two very different things which is probably what makes this series so good and so wildly hard to predict.

Jim Calafiore is really nailing the art on this book. It’s gritty, rough, and still somehow beautiful. The character designs are fantastic, and the world is a lived-in disaster area that feels as horrifying as it looks, which is meant to be a compliment.

I’m pretty sure that this is nearly the end of this mini-series, but, hopefully, that means that this series has adventures yet to come. With the huge Kickstarter success and the terrific awesomeness of this book still working its magic, it’s hard to think it won’t be back. Really, this is super fun. Go and read it.
